Introduction to CBD Flower & CBD Infusions

What is CBD Flower?

This is a common question we receive from customers both in-store and online. Technically speaking, CBD and marijuana are the exact same species. The only thing that makes the distinction between hemp and marijuana is the law of whichever state or country you’re in. Another technicality is the amount of THC in the plant, that’s actually responsible for determining the legality of the situation.

So as far as science is concerned, there is no difference between the cannabis plant and the hemp plant because it’s all actually the same species: Cannabis Sativa. The only difference between the two are the distinction that the law makes and the distinction that retailers make. At the end of the day, hem flower is just cannabis sativa bred to have naturally higher CBD percentage than that of marijuana or industrial hemp.

Is CBD Flower Potent?

Another question we regularly receive from clients is that regarding potency. Often times when customers ask this they’re basically asking it will get them high. Now, there are other circumstances, of course, that the customer consumes CBD for a medical reason and they’re actually concerned with the potency of the CBD, but a lot of other times the only reason someone is buying CBD or hemp flower from your store is because they are seeking a cannabis-like effect.

Depending on the type of flower that you purchase and what you’re looking to accomplish with it, CBD flowers can be very potent, especially if you do not consume marijuana. This is only the case because sometimes .3% THC can be mislabeled and if you’re not used to it you can actually get a little bit of a buzz.

Does CBD Flower Smell?

When we get this question, it’s sort of hard to describe to someone unless they have a pretty good knowledge of marijuana and it’s smell and then hemp and it’s smell. As I previously mentioned, there is not scientific difference between the plants but there are a lot of different and varying characteristics between them. When you open a bag of real chronic, a myriad of smells can hit you from everything between gassy ethanol and fruity lemon, but with CBD flower the smell is quite similar, though it’s muted and normally far less spicy in terms of noticeability and the manner in which it alerts your nose.

CBD flower smells a lot like marijuana, but as I stated, it’s muted. So when I flew with a couple ounces of CBD flower from Arizona to Louisiana I didn’t run into any issues from law enforcement coming or going.

Can You Get High Off of Hemp Flower?

Yes! You can. Definitely get a sort of high from hemp flower, though nothing even close to the potency of legal marijuana. Though hemp flower is often marketed as non-psychoactive, for someone who isn’t used to THC at all, they will often feel effects.

To be clear, though, the CBD in the CBD flower is not what’s causing an effect. The actual CBD within the product is non-psychoactive so it mostly functions as an anti-inflammatory and Nuero-protectant and again, does not get you high.

Will CBD Cause You to Fail a Drug Test?

This is usually the primary concern of those consuming CBD, “will I piss hot at my job”. Here’s the thing, if you’re only consuming CBD isolate without any other cannabinoids then you’re good, but the lines begin to blur in full spectrum blends and blends that contain CBN because it actually can interact with whichever markers are used to gauge THC in a drug test.

Something to take into consideration, too, is that even though the THC markers state that the product’s levels are below .3% THC often times the drug tests you take at an employer’s vary in sensitivity so what may make you fail one test may not cause you to fail the other. So just because you’re passing certain drug tests does not mean you will pass others.

*Something to keep in mind: The mechanism of CBD and its binding to receptors is much more difficult if there’s not THC in the substance, tincture, or infusion already because they naturally work together. So without THC, CBD is more or less inapplicable besides the potential to interact with certain nerves in the spinal cord.

The Different Types of CBD

Flower: CBD-rich hemp flower is simply the cannabis sativa plant grown under the agreement that there would be no more than .3% THC present in the flower itself. For those of you who may trying to cut down on smoking or simple enjoy the ritual of rolling, smoking, etc, this is a great route to get your CBD, especially because it already has naturally occurring THC. As far as bioavailability is concerned, you’re consuming about 25% of the active ingredients available in the flower.

Gummies: Gummies and other edibles are great for discreet consumption, not to mention that the cannabinoids present in the gummies are more readily absorbed by your body than from the smoke and flower. By this I mean that the bioavailability is much higher in edible versions than in smokeable versions.

Other Edibles: As with the gummies, pretty much any edible is made the normal way. Gummy, brownie, cookie, etc is made, but simply paired with a CBD oil or extract. Make sure to read the label so you understand exactly what’s in the edible so you understand how your body may reach to it.

Drinks: Recently, CBD has permeated into the beverage realm and I’ve noticed it as a booster in all sorts of teas and energy drinks. CBD is a popular calming agent so this often pairs it with lavender or other calming herb of the sort. The bioavailability in the drinks is about the same as the edible because at the end of the day you’re consuming either an oil or a tincture.

Oils: The most common CBD oils are made from MCT oil, sunflower lecithin, or hemp oil. What you’re looking for here, from a craftsmanship perspective, is a carrier oil with a high level of fat. This is so that it’s the best possible vehicle to transport your CBD or THC into the body. More fat=more space for the THC and CBD to grab on and metabolize, in turn making it more medicinally effective.

Tinctures: Tinctures in this context specifically refer to CBD extractions made specifically from alcohol. In terms of science and bioavailability, this method of consumption acts similarly to an edible and it is absorbed in the body the same way. From a sales perspective these may be the best kind of tincture or oil to have on hadn’t simply to due to the ease that a vodka tincture could be injected into pretty much any liquid, crafting the perfect relaxing summer or wintertime drink.
